This document describes how KanaHelper (the “App”) collects and processes data, and the terms under which it is provided.

1. Description of the App

KanaHelper is a free, non-commercial educational application designed to help users practice Japanese Hiragana and Katakana characters through handwriting exercises.

The App does not require user accounts and does not provide cloud synchronization.

2. Data Collection and Processing

2.1 Crash and Stability Data

The App uses Firebase Crashlytics, a service provided by Google, to monitor application stability and diagnose technical issues.

Data that may be collected:

Anonymous or pseudonymous installation identifiers
Device information (model, operating system version)
Application state at the time of a crash
Crash logs and stack traces

Purpose:
To detect, diagnose, and fix bugs and improve app stability.

Legal basis (GDPR):
Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)).

Third party involved:
Google LLC (Firebase Crashlytics).

2.2 Handwriting Recognition (Digital Ink)

The App uses Google ML Kit Digital Ink Recognition to convert handwritten characters into digital text.

According to Google’s current documentation, handwriting recognition is performed entirely on the user’s device. Handwriting input is processed locally and is not transmitted to external servers, stored, or used for analytics, advertising, or model training.

Purpose:
To provide handwriting recognition functionality requested by the user.

Legal basis (GDPR):
Performance of the service requested by the user (Article 6(1)(b)).

2.3 Practice Data (Local Storage)

The App stores practice history and statistics locally on the user’s device.

This data is stored only on the device and is not transmitted to any server.

The App does not sell, rent, or share personal data for advertising or marketing purposes.

Data may be processed by Google services only for:

App stability monitoring (Firebase Crashlytics)
Handwriting recognition functionality (ML Kit)

4. International Data Transfers

Google services used by the App may process data outside the European Union, including the United States. Google applies appropriate safeguards, such as Standard Contractual Clauses, to protect transferred data.

5. User Rights

Users have the right to:

Access their personal data
Request correction or deletion
Restrict or object to processing
Request data portability

California (CCPA/CPRA)

California residents have the right to:

Know what personal data is collected
Request deletion of personal data
Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal data

The App does not sell or share personal data as defined by the CCPA.

6. Data Retention

Crash reports are retained by Firebase only as long as necessary for debugging purposes
Handwriting data is processed ephemerally and not stored
Local practice data remains on the device until the app is uninstalled or its data is cleared

7. Children’s Privacy

The App is not directed to children under the age of 13, and the developer does not knowingly collect personal data from children.

8. Terms of Use

8.1 Educational Purpose

The App is provided for educational purposes only. No guarantee is made regarding learning outcomes or accuracy.

8.2 No Warranty

The App is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied.

8.3 Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer shall not be liable for:

errors or inaccuracies in the App
loss of locally stored data
technical issues, bugs, or downtime
any damages arising from the use or inability to use the App

8.4 User Responsibility

Users are responsible for how they use the App and any conclusions drawn from its content.

9. Changes to This Document

This document may be updated from time to time. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
